The new USFL enters Week 4 with a three-day extravaganza spreading from Friday to Sunday, and we see another two referees and their crew making their debut. The USFL will use 35 refs and officials from various FBS divisions. These officials will be split across five crews with five refs working on a rotational basis across the four games each week. Let’s take a look at the five referees for the 2022 USFL season and which refs are assigned to Week 4 games.
USFL refs for the 2022 season
Mike Pereira takes up the role as the head of the USFL officiating. Pereira headed up the NFL’s officiating from 2001 to 2009 and brings a high level of experience to the position for the USFL’s first season. Ron Baynes works with Pereira as the officiating supervisor, and Steve Strimling is the officiating coordinator.
The five refs for the 2022 USFL season are:
- Bryan Banks | Big Ten
- James Carter | SEC
- Duane Heydt | ACC
- Alex Moore | SEC
- Larry Smith | Big Ten
Each referee will be part of a seven-person crew with the same positions as the NFL: Referee, Umpire, Down Judge, Line Judge, Field Judge, Side Judge, and Back Judge. Only three of the officials selected by the USFL have never been in the NFL’s Officiating Development Program. Of the USFL officials, 20 were on the AAF officiating roster, and 23 were on the XFL officiating roster.
USFL Week 4 referee assignments
We continue to see the USFL rotating its crews, with two crews working the four games each week. This week, Bryan Banks and Duane Heydt will be the referees in charge of the calls. It has been a good week for Heydt, as he became one of eight officials working in the USFL to be hired by the NFL.
Heydt and Banks will not be working with their usual crews this week. Heydt will be supported by the crew that usually works with Alex Moore. Meanwhile, Banks will head up the crew that usually works with Larry Smith.
